types of floor tiles, the choice of the optimal coverage

Tired of endlessly raking out centners of dust, which is bound to form when the concrete floor is abraded during the operation of the garage, you will come to the decision to do something about it. And yet, the flooring in the garage, made of concrete, is subject to deformation and local destruction under the influence of impacts and falling of various heavy metal objects stored in large quantities in an average garage.

It is also problematic to remove spills of fuels and lubricants from the concrete floor since these substances are easily absorbed into the loose concrete surface. In general, the reasons for tiling the floor with floor tiles in the garage are quite enough, by the way, including the aesthetic component.

 Requirements for flooring

Before you make a choice on the material and decide which garage tile is appropriate in a case, you need to clearly understand what criteria floor tiles must meet. This is due to the specific conditions in which the operation of the garage space takes place and, consequently, increased requirements for the finishing material. So, the properties that a tile for a garage should have:

    • Chemical resistance. A garage is a place where many chemicals are present, these are various types of car cosmetics, fuels, lubricants, and household chemicals stored in this room.
    • Resistance to mechanical influences. The tiles in the garage are largely subject to mechanical stress: increased load from the weight of the car, high abrasion of the floor covering, and possible point impact from heavy metal objects.
    • Water resistance. Floor tiles laid in the garage are constantly exposed to moisture and there can be several sources of its appearance: from the street during precipitation, during the arrival of a wet or snowy car, and washing it, if the arrangement of the room allows it.
  • Fire safety. The garage, being a room with an increased fire hazard, due to the possible storage of flammable and combustible materials in it, must be made of appropriate materials. Also, the tile for the garage should be non-flammable or at least not support combustion.
  • Frost resistance. Considering that most often the garage room is not heated and to some extent damp, frost resistance will be an important property in the characteristics of the tile.

What materials meet the requirements and can be used for laying on the floor in the garage. These can be such types of tiles:

  • Clinker
  • Ceramic
  • Sidewalk
  • Porcelain stoneware for the garage

Characteristics, advantages, and disadvantages of each type of Flooring tile

Each garage, in addition to the parking lot, has additional functions, in one case it can be a repair shop, in another car wash. And therefore, the floor finish must correspond to all the functions of the room.

Clinker tiles

Clinker tiles are a finishing material obtained from slate clays by extrusion. This method, and provides those positive properties and characteristics, thanks to which, clinker tiles have gained popularity and distribution:

  • Aesthetic Appearance
  • Good Strength Of The Product;
  • Durability;
  • Frost Resistance;
  • Wear Resistance;
  • Uv Resistance;
  • Ease Of Maintenance Of The Lined Surface;

Ceramic tile

Like any other type of ceramics, this product is made from fired clay, but its front side is covered with glaze. Laying the floor in the garage with such products is quite acceptable and has several advantages:

  • environmental safety;
  • resistance to temperature changes;
  • ease of maintenance.

Paving slabs

The scope of such a finishing material is not limited to its use for the construction of sidewalks and playgrounds, with great success with paving slabs, the floor can be laid in the garage.

Due to the large thickness of the product, the floor from it can withstand quite large loads, and the laying is carried out both by the “dry” method and by the traditional method of the adhesive mixture.

  • Paving slabs are durable and easy to install
  • Also, the “pluses” of the material include:
  • acceptable cost;
  • long service life;
  • strength;
  • a large selection of shapes, sizes, and colors;
  • not slippery.

These characteristics limit the scope of paving slabs and make installation in unheated garages with high humidity undesirable.

Ceramic granite

Porcelain stoneware, as a kind of ceramics, differs from other fired clay products by the additives introduced into its composition, the pressing of the workpiece, and the increased firing temperature, which allows the material to acquire exceptional properties and, first, low porosity, which also leads to other positive qualities.

Rubber tiles

Recently, the flooring in the garage, made of rubber, has become widespread. Finishing material has many positive qualities:

  • good wear resistance;
  • there is no water absorption at all;
  • non-slip surface;
  • resistance to mechanical influences, including point impacts;
  • dirt is easily removed from the rubber surface;
  • a large assortment;
  • low injury risk.

Some features of flooring installation and material selection

For the long-term and functional operation of the flooring in the garage, you need to follow simple recommendations:

  • In an unheated room, porcelain stoneware or clinker tiles are laid on frost-resistant adhesive mixtures.
  • The base for the cladding must be flat and without voids.
  • Solid elements are mounted at the gate, at the most visible wall, or, if there is an inspection pit in the room, from the pit opening.
  • To drain water from the room, laying should be carried out with a slope towards the gate.
  • If the garage provides for washing, then measures are required to collect, receive and drain water from the garage.

When choosing the right material for flooring in the garage, you need to consider the following factors:

  • functions assigned to the premises;
  • the degree and intensity of the load on the floor;
  • room temperature;
  • presence of harsh chemicals.
